Research Assistant – Industrial Energy Modeling
£24,273 - £29,853 pa
Institute of Energy & Sustainable Development
The IESD is a research-led multidisciplinary group of specialists whose aim is to make a worthwhile and significant contribution to sustainable development through research, consultancy and education. Research to improve the energy efficiency and reduce the carbon emissions of buildings is a particular strength.

A researcher is sought to work on an exciting €12.8M research project ‘Knowledge, Awareness and Prediction of Man, Machine, Material and Method in Manufacturing – KAP’ in which De Montfort University is one of 13 partners from European industries, universities and research organisations. The project runs until August 2013, and is funded by the European Commission under the Seventh Framework Programme, as part of the ‘Smart Factories’ funding stream of the ‘Factories of the Future’ initiative. This initiative, aims to help European industry to meet the increasing global consumer demand for greener, more customised and higher quality products through a transition to a demand-driven industry with lower waste generation and lower energy consumption.

The aim of KAP is to develop enterprise software that will promote awareness of the energy implications of production management decisions. Within KAP, the researcher will assist in the development of a factory-wide hierarchical model of energy consumption including a classification of energy carriers (such as water, air, gas, electricity and steam) and energy using devices relevant to the factory. The main responsibility of the researcher will be to specify an energy monitoring infrastructure that matches the energy model and allows reporting of energy use according to performance measures specified by project partners. The researcher will work alongside acknowledged experts in the field of energy management and production engineering, and with fellow researchers from across the EU working on software development, user interface design and decision support systems. The researcher will also assist project partners in the development and evaluation of energy saving production planning strategies and dissemination of the results in an international context.

The project is interdisciplinary and a range of qualifications will be considered, including: computer science, engineering and physical sciences. A good honours degree and a PhD (or close to completion)are requirements for the post. Experience of manufacturing industry and an understanding of the energy used in manufacturing are essential. Good general analytical, communication, report writing and presentational skills will be expected and the candidate will need to demonstrate an interest in the ‘Factory of the Future’ and commitment to the goal of sustainable energy.
